‘Follow the science’ is the mantra that our politicians have endlessly commanded throughout this past year of Covid restrictions. The problem is, the advice that scientists give is not coherent or uniform, there are great disagreements. The question is, which scientists do we believe? … which scientific ‘facts’ do we trust? … or are the ‘facts’ in fact guesses? What we have appeared to have done over these months is to make faith in science our religion and the scientists our high priests. But what if they are wrong?
We are also being told with regard to climate change and global warming that, ‘we only have a year to put things right’. Again, we have made the earth our god, or in this case, our goddess; we speak of mother nature, of mother earth, and the environmentalists and politicians are our high priests. But once more, there is tremendous divergence of opinion amongst those who care for our planet, as to what is the problem and what are the solutions: so, who do we believe? … who do we trust?
Have you ever had a car, a mobile phone, a computer or other electrical appliance that went wrong … it seemed impossible to get it to work properly? In the end, the instruction manual, the helpline, the mechanic or those skilled to give help have to be consulted to get advice. A couple of years ago our ‘smart TV’ was not behaving itself, it was anything but ‘smart’, and after doing everything we could to correct the fault, we resorted to restoring the factory’s default settings … now it is working perfectly.
When something goes wrong, we consult the manufacturers, the experts, to get back to how the designers intended the device to function. But who are the experts?
As we look around our world today, we see chaos and confusion, conflict and controversies. From politics to education; from gender identity to race equality; from health care to travel arrangements; from natural and man-made disasters to the growing chasm between rich and poor; from the ongoing and increasing difficulties following the Covid-19 pandemic to pollution, climate change and global warming.
Is this how life was meant to be? How can we move forward? How can we put things right? Who has the answers? How can we find the manufacturer’s default settings? Who is our Designer and Creator?
How can we follow the Maker’s instructions?
The Lord Jesus tells a story about a wise man and a foolish man. The wise man built his house on a foundation of rock and was safe and secure when the wild and strongest storms beat on his home. The foolish man built his house on sand, which was destroyed in those same destructive and disastrous storms.
Jesus tells us that the wise man is the one who listens to the Creator’s instructions for life, he walks in obedience to them and is safe and secure when disaster comes. He says that the foolish man is the one who hears the same words, but refuses to follow the Maker’s instructions and the result is destruction.
The Bible tells us: “The fool says in his heart that there is no God”
“Jesus, ‘the Stone the builders rejected, has become the Cornerstone, the Foundation Stone’”
Jesus is the Rock upon which we must build our lives … then we will be eternally safe and secure.
‘On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand’
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for You created all things,
and by Your will they were created and have their being”
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”
Are you following the scientists, the politicians, the environmentalists?
Or are you obeying the Maker’s instructions?
